
Tom van der Horst studied at the Delft University from 1981 to 1987. Since 1988 he has been working at TNO, as head of the product development department. He initiated the first eco-design programme (1988-1993). Subsequently he directed the department of sustainable product innovation and operated as project manager of large eco-design programmes, cooperating with companies like Océ, Philips, Atag and Nike. Tom has also been founder and front man of Kathalys, a research institute for sustainable product innovation TNO/TUD (1994-2001). Since 2002 he was employed at the institute Strategy, Technology and Policy of TNO as team leader sustainable innovation and founder of research institute Transitions TNO/EUR. From 2005 to 2010, Tom has been Business Unit manager at the department of Innovation and Environment of TNO Built Environment, a strategic think tank that engages in research concerning innovation, sustainability, environmental development and economy. From 2011 onward Tom is Research Manager of the expertise centre Innovation and Environment and team leader technology and innovation within Strategy and Change.
